Their are many births here on the ranch but today was a first for us and a somewhat rare occurrence; one of our Hereford cows gave birth to a set of identical twins; two black baldy bull calves. A black baldy is a type of crossbred beef cattle produced by crossing Hereford cattle with a solid black breed, in this case an Angus bull (Tex).
I just happened to be there for the big event. I witnessed the first calf’s birth, which went very well. I turned around to check a water tank and in less than a minute his twin brother was born. If my math is correct the chances of identical twin calves is 6 in every 10,000 births; a 0.0006% chance.
Mom handled everything with skill and grace and I am happy to report Mom and calves are all doing well. That’s Mom there in the background behind the twins. Tex, the proud father, seems to be taking it all in stride, just another day at the office.
Witnessing these miracles of life is one of the special blessings of this ranch. Babies and every new born animal have a way of bringing magic and miracles into our lives. Their innocence and joyful loving presence reminds us of the good things in the world. The best things in this life are simple and beautiful and we can’t help but be present and live in the moment.
